How can I tell if my cylinder is running out?

All gas cylinders have their own tare (empty) weight displayed on them. Cylinders are filled to the maximum capacity.

To monitor your remaining gas supply, we recommend using a scale.

For example, if a 13kg cylinder weighs 25kg, the tare itself may weigh 12kg while the gas content weighs 13kg. To gauge the remaining gas level, simply place the cylinder on a scale and note the weight. If the scale reads 14kg, you would deduct the tare weight of 12kg to come to a final figure of 2kg of gas.

What should I do if I think my bottle is leaking gas?

This will need to be returned to us for inspection. Please contact us immediately at the first sign of a potential leak and we will arrange for collection.

How can I find out how many litres my gas bottle holds?

This will depend on the size and type of the gas bottle.

If you have a propane cylinder (47kg, 19kg, 18kg, 11kg or 6kg), multiply the size of the cylinder by 1.96. To use a 19kg cylinder as an example, 19 x 1.96 = 37.24

If you are using a propane cylinder (13kg, 7kg or 4.5kg), multiply the size of the cylinder by 1.724. For example, 13kg x 1.724 = 22.412.

How long my cylinder will last?

Every appliance and its power settings are different, so there is no one single answer.

For a guideline based on the kw/h of your appliance, please see the below:

table explaining how long a gas cylinder can last

For a more exact (but still not 100% accurate) figure, you will first need to work out the heat energy of your cylinder.

As each kilogram of gas produces 14kw of energy, you would simply multiply the size of your cylinder by 14kw. To use a 13kg cylinder as an example, 13 x 14 = 182kw.

You would then divide this figure by the heat setting on your appliance. To continue the example with a 4.2kw/h cabinet heater, 182 / 4.2 = 43.33 hours (based on a full heat setting).

How do I install a gas bottle?

  • First and foremost, ensure you are in a well-lit and well-ventilated area.
  • Check that you have the correct type and size of regulator for your gas cylinder.
  • Inspect the exterior of your hoses, ensuring that they are marked as suitable for use with LPG and are less than 5 years old. Each hose will be date-stamped with its production date.
  • Inspect the inside of the hose for internal deterioration.
  • Connect the gas supply line to the inlet connection of the gas cylinder, ensuring the connection is secure and leak-free.

For a step-by-step guide to a gas cylinder installation, please take a look at this video produced by Flogas.

Can I swap my bottle for another?

You can swap your gas cylinder for any cylinder within the same category, which are as follows:

Small cylinder category propane - 6kg and 3.9kg
Small cylinder category butane - 7kg and 4.5kg
Leisure gas category (green bottle) - 11kg and 6kg
Gaslight category - 10kg and 5kg

13kg butane and large propane cylinders are like-for-like only.

*Please note should you wish to switch from a smaller cylinder to a larger cylinder, additional costs apply.

Are there charges for using a cylinder?

Yes, you will be required to pay a cylinder charge if you do not have a like-for-like cylinder to exchange. This will vary based on the size and type of cylinder you require.
